Be French for a day at Franschhoek Bastille Festival

Get out your berets and your baguettes – its time once again for the Franschhoek Bastille Festival. The little French town will be celebrating all things Friesian on 16 and 17 July 2011. The festival commemorates Bastille Day on 14 July 1789 when the people of Paris stormed the Bastille, setting in motion the French Revolution.

Every year, beret-wearing foodies flood to Franschhoek for the annual festival. The center of the festival is the Food and Wine Marquee. Here Franschhoek’s restaurants and award-winning wine estates offer tastings to festival goers. Entrance in to the tent is R100 and comes with five tasting coupons. Thereafter tastings are to your own account. Tickets for the tent can be bought on webtickets.

This year, the Town Hall will host Le Marche Français, or French Corner Market, which will showcase artisanal food as well as provide a range of activities to entertain the kids. Don’t miss the barrel-rolling contest which takes place at 2pm on both days at the Food and Wine Marquee.

Traffic can be quite hellish during the festival so make sure you go early. For a full program of the festival click here.
